PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing)
341 clinics offering this service
What is PGT?
Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) screens embryos for chromosomal abnormalities or specific genetic conditions before transfer. This helps select the healthiest embryos and reduce the risk of miscarriage or genetic disorders.
How It Works
Embryo Biopsy
A few cells are carefully removed from each embryo at the blastocyst stage (day 5–6).
Genetic Analysis
Cells are analyzed for chromosomal number (PGT-A), structural rearrangements (PGT-SR), or single gene disorders (PGT-M).
Results Review
Results typically take 1–2 weeks. Your doctor reviews which embryos are suitable for transfer.
Embryo Selection
A genetically normal embryo is selected for transfer in a subsequent FET cycle.
Who Is It For?
PGT is recommended for patients over 35, those with recurrent miscarriage, couples carrying genetic conditions, patients with prior failed IVF cycles, or anyone wanting to maximize their chance of a healthy pregnancy.
Who It May Not Be Right For
PGT may not be worth the additional cost for younger patients under 35 with no history of miscarriage or genetic concerns, patients who produce very few embryos (testing may leave them with no transferable embryos), or those who are not comfortable with potential embryo disposition decisions.
Success Factors
PGT-A can improve live birth rates per transfer by selecting chromosomally normal embryos. However, it cannot improve the total number of viable embryos created.
Timeline
Biopsy is done during the IVF cycle. Results take 1–2 weeks, with transfer in a subsequent cycle.
Risks & Side Effects
- Embryo biopsy carries a very small risk of damage (less than 1%)
- False positives can lead to discarding viable embryos (mosaic embryos are a gray area)
- Additional cost of $3,000-$6,000
- Results add 1-2 weeks to the timeline
- Not all abnormal results are clear-cut — some require difficult decisions
Insurance Reality
PGT is rarely covered by insurance, even when IVF itself is covered. Some plans cover PGT-M (testing for specific genetic diseases) when medically indicated but not PGT-A (aneuploidy screening). Expect to pay $3,000-$6,000 out of pocket in most cases.
Alternatives to Consider
Transfer without testing
Skip PGT and transfer the best-looking embryo by morphology. Faster and cheaper, but higher miscarriage risk for older patients.
Non-invasive PGT (niPGT)
An emerging technique that analyzes culture media instead of biopsying the embryo. Still experimental at most clinics.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR?
PGT-A screens for chromosomal abnormalities (extra or missing chromosomes). PGT-M tests for specific single-gene disorders like cystic fibrosis or sickle cell. PGT-SR detects structural chromosomal rearrangements (translocations).
Should everyone do PGT-A?
No. PGT-A is most beneficial for patients over 37, those with recurrent miscarriage, or after repeated IVF failures. For younger patients with no risk factors, the evidence for routine PGT-A is debated.
