Choosing Your Fertility Clinic
With over 1,600 fertility clinics in the United States, finding the right one can feel overwhelming. Here are five critical questions to help you make the best choice.
1. What Are Your Success Rates for My Specific Situation?
Don't just look at overall success rates — ask about rates for your age group, diagnosis, and the specific treatment you're considering. Ask for their SART-reported data and how their rates compare to national averages.
2. What Is the Total Cost, Including All Fees and Medications?
Get a complete cost breakdown before starting treatment. Ask about consultation fees, monitoring costs, procedure fees, anesthesia, embryology lab fees, medications, genetic testing, embryo freezing and storage, and any additional charges.
3. Who Will Be My Primary Doctor, and Who Performs the Procedures?
Some clinics assign you a primary doctor who handles your entire cycle, while others rotate doctors. Ask whether the doctor you consult with will be the one performing your egg retrieval and embryo transfer.
4. What Is Your Approach to Multiple Embryo Transfers?
The trend in modern fertility medicine is toward single embryo transfer (SET) to reduce the risks associated with multiple pregnancies. Ask about the clinic's SET rate and their philosophy on how many embryos to transfer.
5. What Support Services Do You Offer?
Fertility treatment is emotionally demanding. Ask about counseling services, support groups, financial counseling, nutrition guidance, and after-hours communication. The best clinics treat the whole patient, not just the medical condition.
Red Flags to Watch For
Be cautious of clinics that guarantee results, pressure you into immediate treatment, don't report to SART, have significantly higher-than-average costs without clear justification, or make you feel rushed during consultations.
